Tummy Time: 0-3 Months

There are many variations of tummy time that can be done with a newborn. If your little one is getting frustrated when placed flat for tummy time, try one of these alternatives instead so they can still get their tummy time in with improved tolerance!

The first variation is on your chest! You can vary how reclined you are to make it more or less challenging. If you are lying flat on your bed or couch with your newborn on your chest, it will require more effort for them to lift their head. The more you sit upright, the easier it is for them to lift up.

The next variation is over a pillow, such as a Boppy pillow. You will want to get your little one’s arms under their chest. This allows them a greater ability to push down into the surface in order to lift their head.

Another option includes placing a rolled blanket under their chest. This, similar to the Boppy pillow, provides some support under their chest to allow more weight-bearing through the arms, which helps with initiating lifting their head.

You can also put your little one in your lap on their tummy. Or, as they get stronger you can start incorporating airplanes as a fun way to sneak in tummy time!

There are many different ways that you can incorporate tummy time into your little one’s day and using a variety of versions can help to keep your baby interested! As your newborn grows, you will be amazed at how much stronger they get each and every day!
